You can find ext2fs dependancies in http://savannah.gnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/hurd/hurd/ext2fs/Makefile?rev=HEAD . It's not an easy task to make it run on Hurd/L4 (which is still far from complete).

About simplefs, I've never heard it :-)

About state of Hurd/L4, I can't tell you much.
