Ed and Joe got it right on. I am proposing to use a unix style install  
directory structure (both in dependencies of our libraries and with an  
install step in the VS solutions).

But I don't want to build any larger infrastructure. I think users  
should take care themselves of all the other libraries. for example,  
that can mean that you have to copy jpeg yourself into that directory  
structure.

Also I don't really want to propose to provide prebuild libraries. I  
often have trouble with them on VS, because they use the wrong runtime  
library, and old one or use weird wrong options. unfortunately under  
MS just because you have a dll, doesn't mean that it will work with  
your code and your selection of runtime lib... Of course, if you have  
a standardised environment (same version of VC, etc.) then providing  
such a zip is useful, but it looks to me that that can only be  
achieved within a single group.

I will check it in later the week (when I have time) and then you can  
have a look at it.
