I don't have a strong opinion on UEFI, but about 80% of the LOC in Linux are drivers and architecture specific code.* Some intrinsic engineering problems of scalability simply can't be avoided. Don't buy the snake oil, if you want an operating system that supports large amounts of hardware you are in for a massive code base.
