This patch is long outdated (check the date). The discussion that led to it was
done in some other place by other people, and I'm afraid I can't quite remember
the details.
Anyway, the general problem is that libtool generates a linker command line
that lists static libraries twice, leading to link errors because of duplicate
symbols. Not sure about the further circumstances, though...
PS: While it never ceases to amaze me what one can do with a shell script,
libtool (and auto*) have been overdoing it by a large margin. That's IMHO, of
course.
