I notice that irix and osf3 are special cases.  Both of them refer to 
either ${output_objdir}/so_locations or ${objdir}/so_locations in 
archive_cmds and archive_expsym_cmds.  Apparently one or both of these 
expands to .libs rather than the directory where the library and its 
objects live.
