I have just looked at the required version of autoconf and it states that 
2.59c is required since the configure.ac makes use of the macro 
AS_HELP_STRING which is not present in earlier versions. If you need to 
support both old and new then I could alter the patch to perform the check on 
the new macro first and then fall back to the old one.
