Thanks for the reply. I was assuming the solution might be something
along the lines of eliminating the common symbols. I recall when I used
to do a lot of porting of code to linuxppc one of our major problems
was that the intel folks routinely linked static libs into a shared lib
without building the static lib with -fPIC. Ulrich Drepper has been
pushing this issue for ages on linux...

Ralf, I was going to try a build of lam 7.0.6 with --with-pic passed
to configure but I wasn't sure if that would really universally force
-fno-common (which I assume is an alias for -fPIC) to be used for all
compiles.
