LilyPond still groups 3 eighth notes in the first half of the measure (as  
noted in comment 2) so the original requested enhancement is not there yet.

Given issue 2566, and the very common use of { a4. a8[ a a] } in 3/4 time,  
we might not want the requested enhancement.  (The textbook quote by Ross  
says to avoid {a4 r8 a[ a a] } )
