http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=582It kicks in for single slurs without collisions? That shouldn't be possible given how I've written the code...could you send me the file you're talking about?
What'd be helpful are examples from the literature where this sort of scenario arises. Shortening the tie horizontally is a bit difficult for circular dependency reasons - to know if there will be an intersection, the tie must be calculated first, so it cannot subsequently be moved in order to respond to the slur.
