that implication is unintended: the patch deals with _existing_ usage of
line_count in the c++ code base, more exactly fixes those cases where
it was used to determine staff extent (assuming that the staff is regular).
some of these uses even had other bugs, like that in slur-scoring.cc.

I'm quite happy to submit the patch in pieces.  would it be OK with you if
the regtest changes go in one batch first, then each .cc file separately
(or even finer)?
