David: Patchy run in Comment #4 seemed weird to me too, but if you look at  
the code of patches/compile_lilypond_test/__init__.py:main() this makes  
sense.

Setting Patch-new to trigger Patchy run on my box as it is in  
https://github.com/gperciva/lilypond-extra/tree/test/build-out-of-source
