My guess is that the bottom of the default slur (probably) coincides with  
the bottom staff line, which gets ugly points. Then LP could flatten the  
slur, but maybe this gets ugly points for being too flat, so it chooses to  
extend the slur downward. IMO this should trigger ugly points :)  but I  
guess it doesn't at present.
