It does also resolve the spacing problem in the example of comment 13.
The original example no longer shows the problem unless you
 \set additionalPitchPrefix = #"add"
so it is added with that option as a new  
regtest 'spacing-non-adjacent-columns3.ly'

In regtests, an errant hyphen disappear from 'markup-special-characters.ly'  
(due to the preliminary re-organization patch in the patch series).
