I've just run into this again, let me share and resume last findings.
If I understand correctly:

- LilyPond .htaccess doesn't force any mime type for .ly files (while  
mutopiaproject.org forces it to plain/text)
- so how the .ly file is handled depends on the system and browser settings  
of the user
- some browsers (like Midori or Chromium) rely on the Mime->app association  
defined by the operating system; other browsers (like Firefox) allow to  
define custom associations

I'm fine with keeping this configuration.
Maybe we should add a brief warning in LM 1.4.2 Clickable examples.
