Typographical errors  {c'4\markup"poco mosso" d'frog h }

resulted in "unexpected markup" and "unexpected string" from version 2.16

After issue 2996 the parser shares more code for lyrics mode and notes  
mode, and then the error messages became  "have to be in Lyric mode for  
lyrics"
which is true, but not very helpful.

If we check for errors a bit earlier we can restore the old messages.
