"by analogy to \textLengthOn or \markLengthOn" reeks like this kind of  
functionality might be called for more often.  Maybe we should provide a  
generic interface along the lines of \hide and \omit?  That way, we gain a  
\tweak for one-shot cases as well without having to revert to \single.
