It makes sense that the side position interface looks at direction, as it  
does not want to consider the Y-extent of a grob if it is pointed in a  
different direction.

The design in side-position-interface is solid - I wouldn't tamper with  
it.  Conceptually, the best thing to do is to:

-) ignore properties if their evaluation will invariably cause volatile  
behavior
-) make estimations of them if they can be estimated
-) use the real property when possible

I hope one day to have time to give this a proper look but I always analyze  
problems of this sort through that prism.
