Fails make - misplaced '{' or '}'

Can't see anything that obvious but am wondering if it is because you are  
using

sed -i -r 's/[0-9a-z]{40}/NEW-COMMITTISH/' *.texidoc
--snip--

and the {40} needs to be escaped somehow?
