\hspace is not a stretchable space (and not separated by word space) by
design. So it is correct that the "a" is rather close to the left edge.
However, the "d" should also be comparably close to the right edge, so the
distribution of space seems incorrect. I actually have some branch where I
half-rewrote the fill-line stuff when committing issue 3330, I just need to
pick it up again.
