Ok, this is too stupid for words. It appears to me like master, for
whatever reason, _is_ already failing if New Century Schoolbook is missing
international characters. It turns out that this is the case in Ubuntu
when texlive-fonts-recommended is installed. Removing
texlive-fonts-recommended solves the New Century Schoolbook issues (which
are then taken from Ghostscript's fonts which work fine) at the cost of
removing texlive altogether, and along with it dblatex which depends on
it. Again causing configure to fail.
So what we apparently need to do is _skip_ any bad New Century Schoolbook
fonts until we find good ones, rather than taking the first we find and
then complain if they are bad.
