An easier application of the workaround:
  \override PianoStaff.Beam #'concaveness = #
  (lambda (g)
    (if (ly:grob-property g 'cross-staff #f)
        0 '()))

We should probably adopt this in general: do not score concaveness for  
cross-staff beams.  http://codereview.appspot.com/13584043/

The next improvement, not in this patch, would be: If a beam spans notes on  
the far staff, the near staff, and back on the far staff, then the notes  
are concave and the beam would ideally be more horizontal (the  
slope 'dampened').
