Harmonic heads indicate where to touch a string for harmonics when nominally playing the full-head note. The _combination_ of square and full notehead establishes how a _single_ note is to be played. Separate voices don't really make musical sense with the exception where a note _starts_ as a full note and is then dampened into a harmonic later. But then there is no alignment problem either because the onsets are at different times.
