While translating the NR I've learned that FontConfig is responsible for  
finding the fonts. So I guess that it's just a matter of the versions of  
fontconfig:

$ fc-list --version
fontconfig version 2.10.2
$ lilypond/usr/bin/fc-list --version
fontconfig version 2.8.0

So I guess that this will be fixed when we upgrade FontConfig distributed  
in the binaries to 2.10
