https://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=4371I think we need to be a bit careful here. This is the *learning* manual after all and we're talking about chapter 1.
Even if I don't understand all the dev discussions about the vagaries of \relative and why \absolute is a good/bad idea - I use relative all the time in my simple way because it's easier to user than absolute entry and I don't use variables or separate input files personally - I take Keith's point.
However from a LM perspective perhaps we modify this section slightly - in a 'just-for-now-trust-us' kind of way (I think we do this in other parts of the LM) and perhaps put a more detailed explanation somewhere else (maybe ref something in the NR) for those that care or are curious.
Also remember that while just showing { }, is clutter, some @lilypond ... @end lilypond examples need them because of (I think) the limitations/considerations of the @lilypond 'macros' (Is that the right term?) for TexInfo and so Doc building.
