We call it spoofing and it does suck. For what it's worth, here's an

We have sometimes lost considerable connectivity and productivity by 
being blacklisted (that is the entire University of Texas -- including 
the 70,000 current faculty, staff, and students and also past employees 
 and students) due to this spam technique.

It can be a BIG headache.

As others have noted in this thread, the better news servers now hide 
the address in such a way as to make grep searches somewhat more 
difficult for address harvesters. It works for us--for now.
