This is redundant -- @samp{} already produces fixed-width output.
Oops, I didn't realize that.
In that case, I don't think that @samp{cresc} (as in "@samp{crescendo}
is often abbreviated as @samp{cresc.}") is appropriate. I see three
possibilities:
- @var{cresc}: prints it in italics
- @emph{cresc}: also prints in italics, but this is a generic
"emphasize" command, instead of a specific "this is a piece of notation"
command.
- @q{}: normal text inside single quotes.
I'm leaning towards @var{}, but I could be convinced otherwise.
