I installed Lilypond 2.24.4 on my new MacBook Air, currently running OS 14.7.1
(Sonoma). Previously, updating Lilypond on the Mac tended to break many
things, and I was still running 2.19.x as I was putting off the update. David
Kastrup’s comment to me a week or so ago about my antediluvian install was a
good point, so with the new laptop I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade.
I was pleased to find that the only issues with 2.24.4 update were just getting
MacOS to allow me to run the software. That has a defined fix as described on
the install page, so readily addressed (I had not previously had to go into
Systems Settings to permit Lilypond, Python and gs to be run, that was new).
The Lilypond package seems to work well (with one exception, which is that
beamed stems facing up are printed with the note head preceding and slightly
disconnected from the stem, as if just mirrored upwards).
I use Lilypond with Frescobaldi, updated to 3.3.0, which has a work-around-able
oddity: if launching the app from the Dock or by double clicking it, it is
unresponsive and the menu bar does not appear. It has to be forced-quit. If
launched by double-clicking on a .ly file, it works normally. No idea if there
is a fix for that (e.g., needing to update some dependency).
So, thank you to the team that put the Mac package for Lilypond together and
got it running on Apple Silicon! This is the most painless update of Lilypond
I have ever had. And also thanks to the folks to have been keeping Frescobaldi
going.
