Thanks for your comments Jeff. There are really three separate issues
being discussed here:
1) Incorrect handling of connection close when there are queued data on
receive.
2) Lack of support for shutdown() instead of close()
3) FIN_WAIT2 timer.
I'm concentrating on (1) for the time being, but as noted on the bug it
would be good to preserve some of the existing behaviour so that if we
ever want to fix (2) it would be a little easier. However, (2) is not a
high priority: it's not a feature that has ever been requested as far as
I can remember - of course if someone wants to raise a feature request
that would be different! (3) deserves a separate bug report - could you
add one on savannah?
