Any chance of supporting --version and -- for all long names so we follow
the general long name pattern now emerging to keep all the posix apps
happy. (Not saying take -version out just yet, but do both)

Note its not (c) the gnu public license as that above implies. Putting
user/os/date in implies having the makefile write a small .h file
