Another approach is to replace the resolver library entirely, e.g.,
with the bind library.  This can be done without being the system
administrator, provided you have enough disk space, etc.  It is my
experience that the performance of programs linked to libbind is
superior to that when linked to libresolv.  This work around is
documented in Al's Picks FAQ.
