Your proposal sounds reasonable. 
Unless the recent changes have addressed that (I'm using 2.8.1rel2), 
these textareas aren't really easy to navigate, especially if you're 
trying to edit them, so any extra clues are helpful. 
So any extra numbering, I would think, would only positively add to 
the information available to the user.
