Which will fail: no compiler, which the user will not be able to
understand. I've seen this one several times on at least one mailing
list from plug and play users. Assume that modern linux users do
not have any development tools installed.

Most of the autoconf scripts I have seen create logs automatically; the
problem is that people don't understand that autoconf is supposed to
produce compilation errors, so they pick the first compilation error
and mail that to the support list!
