Well, that's the documented "Line Editor" behavior, see the included
help files. If Debian changes that, the text there should also be
changed.
In upstream 2.8.3dev.1 and up, there is a new "Bash-like Binding" for
which the Remove key (aka "delete") acts as {you,debian users,debian policy}
expect (assuming mapping of the key isn't messed up at some other level).
Possibly it should be changed accordingly for the other bindings, too.
