Hello all,

As some of you may already know, since 2016 I maintain a patch adding lzip decompression support to the linux kernel. This includes support for lzip-compressed kernel image, initramfs, initrd, modules, and squashfs filesystems. The patch can be found at http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/lzip/kernel/

In order to test the lzip decompression code of the patch above I have written a test tool called xlunzip. Xlunzip is similar to lunzip, but it uses the lzip_decompress linux module as a backend. Xlunzip tests the module for stream, buffer-to-buffer and mixed decompression modes, including in-place decompression (using the same buffer for input and output). You can use xlunzip to verify that the module produces correct results when decompressing single member files, multimember files, or the concatenation of two or more compressed files. Xlunzip can be used with unzcrash to test the robustness of the module to the decompression of corrupted data.

The xlunzip tarball contains a copy of the lzip_decompress module and can be compiled and tested without downloading or applying the patch to the kernel.

The homepage of xlunzip is at http://www.nongnu.org/lzip/xlunzip.html

Xlunzip 0.3 can be downloaded from
http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releases/lzip/xlunzip/xlunzip-0.3.tar.lz

The sha256sum is:
e407d673688ffac5725719545b0727405a3424d3693078403cc6cb90ea31f4a6 xlunzip-0.3.tar.lz

Please, test it and report any bugs you find.

Thanks,
Antonio Diaz, xlunzip author and maintainer.

If you are distributing software in xz format, please consider using lzip instead. See http://www.nongnu.org/lzip/lzip_benchmark.html#xz1 and http://www.nongnu.org/lzip/xz_inadequate.html
