I don't recall making you my representative. As a package maintainer
for lzip, I strongly prefer split packages than one huge monolith. For
a start, because it means that I only have to update the packages that
have changed rather than upgrading everything because one of them
changed.

This argument sounds very poor. I honestly doubt the majority of *nix
users care the slightest bit about static executables, or C++ dependency
at this point. Do you have any proof that someone considers 'xz better
than lzip' because of C++?
