I see. It is not exactly that the lzlib Makefile calls ar directly, (it uses 
the AR variable), but that AR can't currently be set from configure.

I'll fix it immediately so that AR is treated just as CC and will release a 
corrected version soon. Thanks for reporting it.

I think the maintainer of lzlib in Gentoo is Michal Górny. See 
http://packages.gentoo.org/packages/app-arch/lzlib . In fact I know very 
little about how Gentoo works.
