I traced it to this line in bootstrap:
gnulibdir=`which gnulib-tool | $SED "$dirname"`
Agreed. However I took the opportunity to tidy bootstrap up a little,
and provide a portable alternative to readlink. I believe my patch-19
should clear it up for you.
