The master branch is NOT in decent shape for a release at the moment.
You may be better off preparing your patches against branch-1.4 (the
latest stable release) or branch-1.6 (closer to actually being in a
releasable state).
That said, getting master branch in good shape is also worthwhile.
However, your contributions are starting to be large enough that we have
to consider whether you need to file copyright assignment with the FSF.
Is that something you are willing to pursue?
