Paul Wise passed along an interesting tidbit tonight.
https://lars.ingebrigtsen.no/2020/01/06/whatever-happened-to-news-gmane-org/
The TL;DR: is that the gmane.org domain is soon pointing to a stale IP
address that won't have a working system behind it as the servers are
getting moved to a new datacenter but Lars is unable to update the DNS
records or get them updated now that he does not have control of the
domain. Reading that blog is a tale of tears.
Lars has registered a new domain gmane-mx.org and is trying to move
subscription addresses to it in order to keep the Gmane archive
viable. He has automated the process somewhat and already
unsubscribed the old address and subscribed the new address to many of
the mailing lists.
I spot checked several lists.gnu.org mailing lists. It looks like he
or someone was able to successfully unsubscribe the old gmane.org
address and subscribe the new gmane-mx.org address which points to the
new server IP address. So there is nothing for us to do. I think it
is all done.
Maybe. It would be cool to grep through the subscription lists to see
if gmane.org still exists and if all were converted to gmane-mx.org
okay.
But regardless this seemed like useful background information to share
with the group here. Since Gmane has been such an important presence
with regards to mailing lists everywhere.
