Makefile may know if it is win32 from the drive letter, e.g.
ifeq "" "$(strip $(patsubst /%,,$(firstword $(CURDIR))))"
ARCH = unix # unixy shell is implied here
else
ARCH = win32
endif
but I have no idea how to determine the shell flavour.
