I think this (and all followups) add a fair bit of complexity for the
sake of what is clearly some kind of bug in your bmake installation.
The latest bmake package I downloaded from
ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/misc/sjg/ includes a "bmake.1" file
which is a perfectly normal page using the mdoc macro set.  Perhaps for
some reason you have ended up with "bmake.cat1" installed in the manpath
rather than in the catpath; but this is clearly a bug in your
installation and I don't think it's necessary for man(1) to accommodate
it.

As for using a shell script here as in later versions of this patch,
that definitely wouldn't be acceptable even if I accepted the basic
feature.  Comparisons with configure speed won't wash; configure is only
part of the build system and its performance is of secondary importance
at most, but the speed of the nroff pipeline is already problematic in
some environments (think automated checking of large numbers of pages),
so I certainly don't want another process in there to slow things down
further.
