Pretty simple:
Try starting it via:
nohup ./mldonkey >> /tmp/mldonkey.log 2>>1 </dev/null &

or if you are not interested in the output, exchange /tmp/mldonkey.log 
with /dev/null.

That should help you. Alternatively, you can use 'screen', i.e. start 
'screen' run ./mldonkey in there, hit CTRL-a d and log off again, 
whenever you feel like tacking mldonkey again, run 'screen -r' on the 
machine again.
