You might want to take a look at the Nagios check_monit plugin: http://code.google.com/p/nagios-monit-plugin/source/browse/trunk/check_monit.py. It queries the monit server via. XML and can even return a list of monitored applications that are not being checked.

I can test the server with a simple icmp ping, but I was wondering is there a specific protocol test for testing monit? Or do I just need to use a standard tcp test to port 2812?
