hm. well, the easiest thing you can do is upgrade to automake 1.7, but
I'd generally *like* to be compatible with automake 1.5 (and others)
if it's possible. I don't really think we're using super exotic
automake features, but maybe we are.

tom, could you hazard a guess as to whether simultaneous automake 1.5
<-> 1.7 compatibility is possible for our Makefile.am? or did too much
change over those releases?
