At the end of CVS import, it says:
branches: 114 edges: 1984 file branches: 337 tree branches: 117
versions: 6888.

I see you've already filed the CVS import one.  I filed the addtree
performance issue (though I haven't tried the updated one yet).

Oh, it finished in about 20 mins - much better.
