Hi Carole,
In fact I'm writing this piece tomorrow so I'd definitely need to
speak to you today. Alternatively you could respond to the questions
below if possible some time today or tomorrow morning. Sorry about
that, but my deadline is end of tomorrow.
I'd like to know more about why Nature Network is possibly thought of
as a backward step
Also what Access Grid is and how many UK users it has. In what way is
it Facebook-style and how is it different to Nature Network.
Do you think fewer people are using Jiscmail?
Why are these Facebook-style tools catching on for academics?
How are they going to change academe? For better or for worse and in
what ways?
Facebook is used as a dating tool as well as for other uses.
Scientists have a limited number of tenure years at the same place
and I have been told they are using these tools for dating too. Have
you come across this?
Why do you think these Facebook-style sites are useful to academics?
Do students and academics want to use the same social networking sites?
Many thanks for your help.

Jessica,
Â
Nature Networks is indeed an interesting venture. Actually, I’ve
heard some academics say (unattributable, I’m afraid!) that it’s
a backward step in that it gives a platform (blogs) for a chosen few
without being peer-reviewed, which is against the original ethos of
Nature.
Â
Anyway, I’m more than happy to talk to you about developments and
usage of Access Grid, which is my main area, and is supporting
researcher collaborations. I’ve been involved in several projects
where the Access Grid has been used by artists in innovative and
exciting ways. In a separate intitiave, I’m also involved in a
project that’s aiming to support social scientists through the
provision of advanced computing or ‘e-Science’ technologies.
Â
Finally, you may also be interested in talking to Prof. Carole Goble
(cc-ed), who’s leading a project called myExperiment
(_www.myexperiment.org_ <http://www.myexperiment.org/>), which offers
scientists an environment to share workflows. She can tell you more.
Â
Let me know when’s good for you to speak. My diary is a bit chocka
over the next two weeks so either late in the day (after 6pm) or
early (before 9am) is probably best for me (though not today or
tomorrow).
Â
Mike

Dear Michael,
This is Jessica Shepherd from the Guardian.
I wonder if I can ask for some help. I see that you are the convenor
for Euro AG. I am writing about Nature Networks which is a
facebook-style site for academics in the science fields. It's really
taking off. It only launched in February and already about 10,000 UK
academics use it to collaborate, chat etc.
I thought it would be good to explore the different ways academics
are speaking to each other now. Is there a facebook-style equivalent
for the arts and humanities? What other than jiscmail is there? Is
jiscmail more popular than ever or the opposite?
Who do you think would be good to speak to? Are you free to talk
about this too?
Many thanks for your help.
All the best
Jessica
