After getting the ok from Chris, I've committed
nanobits3.patch. The only change from the last version is
that all static functions are now non-static.
I asked Chris off-list about the static-functions issue;
this was his reply (quoted w/permission):

Note that with nanobits3 applied, for consistency,
regcomp() calls in future patches should have
REG_EXTENDED set.
