That's true, that's an advantage. But I still don't like the M-S-X triplet.
I like it that M-U and M-E in the help lines change to M-u and M-e when
'set splitmeta' is used.

As far as I know, <Shift> adds 12 to the number of the function key. So
Shift+F1 == F13. F13 to F24 are already bindable, so for the function keys
<Shift> is already covered. <Alt+Fn> are mostly grabbed by the desktop
environment (Alt+F2 => run program, Alt+F4 => close window; those I use
sometimes, but most other Alt+Fn do something too), so those combinations
are hardly useful to make bindable. And <Shift+Alt+Fn>... way overboard.
