Hi Mark,
How is your contracting system worked out?
NeL is under GNU/GPL licence, if you want to use NeL to make your
mmorpg, you need your project to use the same licence, more information
about the licence is here:
http://www.opensource.org/licenses/gpl-license.php
Or an human readable explaination:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/GPL/2.0/
Is the entire Nel Tool open source?
Almost all, and we also have Ryzom tools that are not open source.
> How is the game sold?
With money :) Players pay for the game access and to get the game.
Is the game closed source under a private contract?
Actually you don't have other choice that using the GNU/GPL licence if
you want to make a game with NeL.

figure out what contracting I should use. Is there a way to make my
tools and game completley open source and still profit with sevice
charges? Should I use a Private contract somewhere?
Of course you can opensource all your code and earn money with the
service charge (player access to servers, give support to other people
that want make another game with your code, ...)
