This works for me on a Linux machine, so it might be a problem with the
pre-compiled Mac version of 3.4.0 or maybe it's a general Mac problem.

Have you looked at the README.MacOS?  We have at least two developers who
regularly compile on Macs and they have written up a fairly comprehensive set
of steps.

I notice in the CFLAGS variable that they are using --disable-readline and
--disable-docs.  The disabling of readline seems relevant to the troubles you
report.
